A Bit About Accelerated Learning
Techniques
Learning is accelerated when the trainer
or facilitator adapts both their training and the environment to
accord with how our brains learn most effectively. It is based on
research into the physiology of the brain and is intended to encourage
learners to be more motivated and engaged in their learning.
Delegates should be in the correct emotional state
for learning which means allowing both hemispheres of the brain
to engage in activity and work together. In times of stress or discomfort
the brain will enter a ‘reptilian state’ where the priority is to
meet the body’s immediate needs (Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs) and
in this state it is almost impossible to learn effectively.
Brains emit electrical impulses, more readily
known as ‘brain waves’. There are four types: Alpha, Beta, Theta
and Delta. The aim of a competent trainer is to encourage learners
into the Alpha wave state – and keep them there, as that is the
most conducive state for learning. The Alpha wave state promotes
relaxation and thinking and promotes inspiration, sharper memory
and speedier assimilation of facts.
To accomplish this, the Accelerated Learning facilitator
will create a relaxed and comfortable environment, encouraging the
drinking of water rather than caffeinated or fizzy drinks and controlling
the temperature, oxygen and lights levels. At low energy levels
the trainer will introduce comfort breaks, practical activities
or music (preferably Baroque music as this mimics the beat of a
relaxed heart).
Seating arrangements are important – U-shaped
is best and displays of current learning should be around the room.
Facilitators should cultivate a relaxed but stimulating environment
through structuring the lesson to take account of differing learning
styles and create activities which will appeal to visual, auditory
and kinaesthetic learners – taste and smell have a place too.
Stratus facilitators all use a variety of
accelerated learning methods, from music, soft toys, puzzles and
brain teasers, sweets and treats and colourful, easy-read manuals.
We design workshops that encourage emotional intelligence as well
as logic, naturalistic and linguistic intelligences. We use posters
and flipcharts around the room to stimulate memory and recall. Our
workshops are about our learners feeling confident and comfortable
both mentally and physically and we want our learners to come away
from a session feeling invigorated, motivated and energised to take
the learning back to their workplace – and use it!
